As the primary operator at Imperial, he contributed cases to the Registry Of Prostate Embolization UK (ROPE-UK). The success of ROPE-UK led to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) recognition of PAE in 2018 as one of the standard BPH treatments in the UK. In 2016 Dr Burfitt also performed the first robotic PAE in the UK.
MusculoSkeletal Embolization (MSKE) as treatment for chronic joint and tendon pain is an exciting new procedure being developed in Japan since 2009. In 2016 Dr Burfitt travelled to Tokyo for training with Dr Yuji Okuno, the originator of the technique and performed the first UK case in 2017. Working with his orthopaedic surgeon colleagues at Imperial, Dr Burfitt continues to develop this service for NHS and private patients.
At Imperial, Dr Burfitt works closely with the vascular surgeons in the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms with fenestrated EVAR. As a consequence of this expertise, Dr Burfitt has travelled widely teaching this technique to vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists throughout Europe, North and South America, also Australia and South Africa. He has published a number of peer-reviewed articles in this area and spoken at numerous international conferences on this subject.
